How do Buddhist Koans encourage the power of a Zen state of mind through meditation?
Basically it is a question or a riddle. But not just your everyday question however… Oh no. It is a question that is so deep, so intricate, so potent and so puzzling that the mere thought process in the solving of the riddle could lead one into a Zen state of mind or deep meditation. Possibly even Nirvana (not the grunge rock group). Koans are basically a tool with which to achieve that ultimate peaceful and meditative state of mind that is Zen.
Possibly some of you have heard of the 12 step method when it comes to alcoholics’ anonymous or other addictive recovery. There is actually something called the 12 step Buddhist. Part of the ideology is that we are all addicts. Our addictions and how we choose to deal with them are what separate us. There is great healing in the power of the mind and only through the power of the mind can we hope to achieve inner peace.
Some begin their meditation process with meditation quotes such as: “Meditation is not separate from life but it is to live life with more awareness, more consciousness.”
